The prophets and sibyls: hebrew prophets were jewish men who were thought to have prophesized the coming of. Interspersed with pagan sibyls who were also thought to have prophesized christianity: painted in fresco, painted on wet plaster and creates a physical bond, crystalized colour on the pigment is what makes the colours light and bright. The medium is tough and enduring, since the paint is part of the wall. Fresco demands precision, since changes could not be made after the plaster dried. Fresco was considered to be a masculine medium, which would have attracted michelangelo. This is julius ii"s sistine ceiling: not everything is simply propagandistic. There are two small boys behind his shoulder: unidentified, could be angels without wings, could be figures of genius or inspiration. The only gold leaf is on the spindles on the side. Thick black lines outline the features so they can be read from a distance.
