Chicago short stocky sky scrapers in 1898. Daniel burnham flatiron building in new york. 1902. Long indentations called fluting mimics the vertical striation of classical structures. Early empire of a chain store called woolworth. Cass gilbert believed this sky scraper should have the gothic style pointed arch in window pains, ornamentation on the building, higly ornamented. He thought if you"re going to build tall, height should be emphasized by the pointed top. Early sky scrapers were also called cathedrals of commerce. Historicism- the use of architectural elements from historical styles. Architects during this time grabbed elements from gothic, classical roman styles when designing their buildings. Early 20th century is highly aware of history. Rough hewn stone, much more robust and raw in the main entrance to show a sense of mass romanesque style. Interesting building, unlike the flat iron building, we see a stacked fa ade instead of a stretched fa ade.
