Eiffel and l. a. boileau bon marche paris 1876 lights of windows to bring in natural light. Model of elegance ( this was built before eiffel engineered the eiffel tower). Role of iron was to provide lots of space. Thick walls were unsuited for buildings of this type. Louis sullivan"s store in chicago was built upon the bon marche. Marshal field"s in chicago was the biggest department store in the world then 1885.
