Document Summary
Michelangelo buonarroti, study for tomb of julius ii, first version, reconstructed view after hartt, 1505. Julius ii wanted to be known as the second julius caesar. Julius was the perfect patron for michelangelo with his grandiose ambitions. Papacy is not hereditary, when one pope dies, another one is elected, however occasionally it is. The original project for his tomb was never executed. Because it was extremely ambitious, over 40 live size marble sculptures. Once he was elected pope, his first priority was to build his own tomb bc that was his legacy. The nature of the statues was not very christian, they were nudes, classically styled. There was no more room for the tomb once it was planned and so was never built. Michelangelo buonarroti, studies for the sistine chapel with pen sketches for the prisoners or slaves on the julius tomb, 1510.
