Architecture was made very large in the middle of cities, they were the start of skyscrapers. What makes something good is if it looks like something old. Gothic was the beginning modernity: did not look like stuff from the post but was still good. Suger wrote two important texts that talk about the importance of building. Tries to promote his church as the new church of france as this is where all the kings were buried. Compare to st. etienne in caen: doors more elaborate, has a rose window, levels are not all equal (formed like a triangle, rising your spirit upwards) Doors are massive and bronze, and have a long inscription. Doors look like metalwork rather than architecture.
