Men were coming back to their homes after serving for world war i. Women went from the workforce back to being housewives. During the war, females were given jobs such as telephone operators, stenographers, lawyers, doctors, teachers, nurses, salesclerks, secretaries, and servants. If men were lucky, they were given jobs like miners, pilots (transporting mail), social workers, investors, automobile manufacturers, professors, doctors, and lawyers. Many men coming back from the war were jobless because employees found hiring women and the youth to be more cost-effective. On october 29th, 1929, black tuesday occurred, which was a stock market crash in the. Many people lost their jobs, and many companies/factories went bankrupt during this depression. Working conditions and wages were significantly decreased and everyday expenses increased due to inflation and supply & demand. Most unemployed men chose to move to another place with hopes of finding a job, so they did not have a stable home as they were constantly moving.
