Document Summary

Anatomy 216 (reading material: chapter 23: pages 617-624) Lymphoid organs (lymph nodes, thymus, spleen): discrete collections of both diffuse lymphatic tissue and lymphatic follicles or nodules. Pattern of distribution is unique to each organ enclosed by a dense connective tissue capsule. Lymph filtered by passing through little lymph nodes (enlargements in lymph vessels) 100s of lymph nodes in body, but certain areas have clusters close to the surface. Macrophages inside nodes to remove garbage: role in stimulating immune system. Inside there are lymphocytes monitored and presented with antigen captured within node as lymph flows through shape and size structure: Extensions of this connective tissue (trabeculae) penetrate lymph node and divide the portion of the lymph node into smaller compartments: outer cortex and medulla (core) cortex: Imbedded into this diffuse lymphatic tissue are lymphatic follicles (nodules) with a germinal center medulla: Medullary cords irregular shaped extensions of the diffuse lymphatic tissue from the cortex.
