Respiratory system: lecture 1 (nose to the primary bronchi) Filter, humidify, and warm air before it gets to lungs. Site of gas exchange ciliated pseudostratified columnar with goblet cells (r. t. e. ) Rte cells secrete mucous that acts as glue trap for particulate matter in air (even noxious gases) Cilia of cells move like tiny fingers and create current to sweep contaminated mucous to back of throat to be swallowed and sent to stomach. When cilia are exposed to cold temperatures they become sluggish and don"t move mucous to back of throat so mucous builds up why we have runny noses on cold days. Nose- primary passageway for air entering into system. Midline septum- anterior portion is hyaline cartilage (septal cartilage) Divided into 2 halves by a midline septum. Posterior portion of septum made up of 2 bones (volmer and _______) boundaries.
