Between the two folds is the palatine tonsil (the one that gets removed: anterior (palatoglossal) arch, posterior (palatopharyngeal) arch, palatine tonsil: between the two folds/arches, tongue: sits on floor or oral cavity. Function: to manipulate food, to push it back the nasopharynx. Contains lots of taste buds: frenulum: connected to the floor of the oral cavity (lingual frenulum, muscles: bag of muscle; two groups; all innervated by the hypoglossal nerve. When unconscious and lying down, to prevent swallowing tongue obstructing pharynx, jaw thrust to thrust mandible forward. Right genioglossus moves tongue to left, vice versa, medial sticking out requires both.
