Document Summary
Female reproductive system: lecture 2 (reading material: chapter 27: pages 735-746) If you have a problem with cervix, inflammation, premature labour (can delay, but the best way to deliver) Open during menstruation so sperm can swim through. Soft mucus plug: during pregnancy so that it"s closed off. Can"t contract during pregnancy: endometrium: inner most wall, interacts with baby. Spiral arteries in the endometrial uterine glands, when it ends. When pregnant, need to modify the spiral arteries. If unable to modify, baby doesn"t get enough nutrition. Cells migrate from baby site to the spiral artery and line it like endothelial cells. Embryo will connect with mom (cells from embryonic site will migrate, line the uterine artery and modify it) modifying the lumen so that the artery will be bigger because of the need from the baby. Continues from menarche (first menstrual cycle) to menopause. Proliferative phase: build functional zone, restoration of the endometrium.
