Document Summary

Cartilage and bone (reading materials: chapter 3: pages 71-74; chapter 5: pages 116-121; 131-135) Cartilage (supportive connective tissue): provides flexibility and support unique connective tissue, consists of cells, fibers and ground substance three types: based on the quantity and fiber present hyaline fibrous elastic histology: hyaline cartilage: cells, fibers, ground substance. Structurally similar to hyaline cartilage, contains lacunae individually or in small bundles, also contains perichondrium. Bone matrix: two components: organic: cells, fibers, ground substance (collagen, protein, polysaccahrides) inorganic: mineralized salts hydroxyapatite (calcium phosphate, calcium hydroxide) calcium carbonate, sodium, magnesium, fluoride. Haversian (central) canal within an osteon the osteocytes are arranged in circular layers around osteocyte mature bone cells, maintain and the haversian canal, contains blood vessels that give nutrients to osteocytes. Forms: spongy bone does not contain blood compact bone contains blood vessels, relatively dense and solid vessels, forms and open network of struts and plats, more capable of resisting tension applied from many directions.
