Attachment: upper limbs, mammary glands, ribs: 12 pairs (24 ribs) true ribs (pairs 1-7): Attached to sternum directly by costal cartilages thin, flat, curved bones false ribs (pairs 8-12): indirect or no attachment to the sternum: costal cartilage is attached to the costal cartilage of the rib above it. Pairs 11 and 12 are called false floating rib: still has costal cartilage imbedded into muscular wall of back. Head: 2 articulating facets, articulate with the same number vertebrae and the vertebrae directly above. Costal groove: small groove at the inferior length of rib, artery, vein and nerve found here. Angle: where curve starts to angle downwards typical vs atypical rib (particularly the first rib) rib 1, shortest, widest, flattest, 2 grooves. Costal margin the most inferior portion of costal cartilage.
