Document Summary

Occurred from 1860 to 1910 in england; still had influence in canada until the 1930s. Major influence from william morris; based in the idea that industrialization had squeezed creativity out of people and society. Idolized medieval society, especially the decorative gothic period. Wanted these ideas to influence the design of everyday objects; these beautiful objects were meant to provide a transformative experience and counteract the impoverished state of decorative arts at the time. Morris created furniture, stained glass windows, textiles and wallpaper under his company. His wallpaper, for example, required 34 different blocks to create all hand- printed. William morris wanted to influence the mundane visual environment; he thought this was greatly important. He wanted to influence utilitarian things, such as furniture or wallpaper. This was based in a very populist impulse, concerned with social justice. Also turned to his own garden for influence (the wallpaper shows flowers indigenous to his own area).
