Document Summary
Salon du louvre: exhibition of contemporary art, periodic, free admission; established the idea of the art exhibition. It was based on earlier institutions, which came out of the way in which the state used art as propaganda. Art had a strong role as propaganda under the absolute rule of louis xiv, who used art to aggrandize the state and the king. Louis xiv founded the royal academy of painting and sculpture: these academies came out of a desire to intellectualize art production, and come up with a series of rules for making good art. However, they gradually became organs of the state, producing propaganda to aggrandize the monarchy: the artists in the royal academy were essentially the king"s artists", based on the medieval guild model, which regulated production as a craft activity. In contrast to these guilds, however, these academies emphasized the idea that art was an intellectual activity equivalent in intellectual status to poetry or philosophy.
