Document Summary

Art could be defined as something transcending practical function, and often embodying important cultural ideas or values. It could also be seen as a show of skill, beauty, power, or privilege. In the composition of a work, consider its symmetry, whether the elements in it are aligned along an axis, where the eye is drawn to, and whether the painting is demarcated into different sections (eg. light & dark). Consider a painting"s relationship to its artist, its audience, and its broader cultural setting. Greater prosperity and security led to more commissioning of art; often narrative works, and communicating ideology to justify and show the positive side of rulers or other aristocracy. There was a great expansion of literature and art during the period, especially in italy. There was more experimentation with established conventions: for example, paintings began to show more humanity, and poets began to use italian rather than latin.
