1.Sprint Promotion Sends Investors Running

The carrier should be more focused on improving profitability and free-cash-flow generation.

By Evercore ISI ($3.99, Nov. 19, 2015)After days of hinting at a âbig announcement,â Sprint released new pricing plans which offer a 50% discount to plans from T-Mobile US, Verizon Communications and AT&T -- while also covering up to $650 of switching costs.

If a 50% discount from Sprint (ticker: S) sounds familiar, thatâs because it is essentially the same as the companyâs earlier âcut your bill in halfâ promotion -- though, notably, this time it extends to T-Mobile ( TMUS ) customers as well as those from Verizon ( VZ ) and AT&T ( T). And, while this may drive some uptick in subscriber attraction, we note: 1) we believe the most cost-sensitive subscribers likely took advantage of this offer the first time around; 2) we do not agree with Sprintâs contention that transitioning subscribers are likely to opt for higher data plans versus the discounted offerings; and 3) the offer comes at a time when Sprint should be more focused on improving profitability and free-cash-flow generation (and is somewhat contradictory to other recent initiatives such as increasing unlimited pricing by $10 and attempting to cut $2.5 billion in annual costs from its budget). It is this last point -- on the impact to profitability -- that appears to have upset investors the most, sending Sprint shares down 9.3% Wednesday.

Prior to (and on) Sprintâs fiscal-second-quarter call, the company announced that it would seek to cut $2.5 billion in costs. We saw these costs cuts, along with Sprintâs decision to not participate in the 600 megahertz (MHz) auction, to use off-balance-sheet financing, and raise its unlimited pricing by $10, as evidence that Sprint was attempting to improve its cash flow position. However, as part of this current promotion, Sprint is offering up to $650 in reimbursements for early termination fees (ETFs) and other fees (provided you turn your phone in). Because we believe that the most cost-sensitive subscribers may have already taken advantage of this offer the first time around, the corresponding increase in subscriber traction may not be enough to offset the negative implications to profitability and free cash flow.

Sprint sees potential upside from more data, same price. The emphasis of the promotion is to cut your bill in half. Despite this, Sprint believes subscribers are likely to opt for the same nominal value plans, but twice the data. We do not agree. If Sprintâs intention was to see customers double their data, the pitch should have been âdouble your data,â not âtake 50% off.â

Customers can trial the offer for 28 days. If they are not satisfied, and have purchased a device through Sprint, they can return the device with no restocking fee. Importantly, the offer is for activations from Nov. 20 through Jan. 6 and the promotional pricing will run for 24 months. While the offer is available to new Sprint customers, current Sprint subscribers can get a free [Apple (AAPL)] iPad with one year of free service, if they sign a two-year contract. Sprint expects the iPad offer to reduce churn (as customers with more devices become âstickierâ).

Based on our last published model, our discounted-cash-flow-driven year-end 2016 price target is $4. [We rate Sprint at Hold.]

Good morning. Ford Motor Co. CEO Mark Fields says that wireless updates for vehicle software have more or less arrived. Thatâs going to lead to big changes in the way people build and use cars, which are bound to adopt more characteristics of mobile phones. CIO Journalâs Rachael King has the story.

Ford launched Sync Connect with the 2017 Ford Escape at the LA Auto Show this week. The platform lets drivers unlock or start the vehicles from their smartphones. âSync Connect will serve as the platform to offer over-the-air updates allowing us to go beyond the infotainment system such as updating other parts of the vehicle like the engine or driver-assist technologies,â said Mr. Fields, speaking at a press event Wednesday in San Francisco.

Wireless updates mean that phones donât have to be brought into the shop or replaced every time that the operating system is brought up to date, or that a security patch is available. And of course, they facilitate the use of apps and the development of ecosystems. Now, the automobile, which until now has more or less remained the same during its long life cycle, is about to become much more dynamic.

Macquarie taps Barclays BCS -4.34% IT Executive as CIO. Justin Raoul Moffitt, an 18-year IT veteran with Barclays, steps in as CIO at Macquarie starting in February 2016, a company spokesman said.

WRITING on Thomas Piketty's new book, Nicolas Goetzmann notes:

I think that Piketty missed something which might be important: Capital is mobile, workers are not, and in the end, we have this: Gini is reducing on a worldwide basis since 2005.

Scott Sumner adds:

I also like Goetzmann's comment about global Gini coefficients. Liberals should care about global welfare. Are they closet nationalists?

These sorts of remarks are common responses to those pointing out that inequality is soaring across the rich world, and they strike me as very problematic.

It is true, of course, that inequality globally has been falling. And it is absolutely right to say that this trend is hugely important and is contributing to a massive rise in global welfare. We should all be ecstatic about it. But in no way does that development excuse us from caring about and worrying about national income inequality, for a few very important reasons.

The first is that it implies, without ever making an actual argument, that efforts to reduce income inequality within rich economies must necessarily slow reductions in global inequality. Why bring up the global statistic unless you are worried that expressions of concern about national inequality are likely to undermine the global trend? Some egalitarian-minded policies might, of course, but many others would not. I'm not sure why someone would want to stake out the position that subsidized pre-school for disadvantaged children is unnecessary, for example, because global inequality is falling.

Second, while we all should care about welfare globally, we should also recognize that the political salience of the issue is exclusively national. To a first approximation, America's Congress does not care in the least about the status of global inequality. There are no sitting congresspersons from Burundi. National inequality, by contrast, is highly politically relevant. Catch-up in the emerging world has a lot to do with innovation and openness in the rich world. If soaring national inequality undermines political support for policies that facilitate innovation and openness, that's a problem for everyone. It's a pretty basic political economy point that globalization will continue while national polities feel that globalization is broadly in their interest. People who like globalization should therefore be very, very concerned when it doesn't appear to be generating broad-based growth in rich countries.

The third is that inequality is growing within emerging markets. One might be inclined to argue that we shouldn't worry too much about that, since rising inequality is a classic side-effect of rapid development which should go away as emerging economies mature. But one of the most important points in Mr. Piketty's book is that the conventional wisdom that development naturally increases and then reduces inequalities is wrong: the data show that there is no systematic tendency for inequality to fall as an economy matures.

And so we should note that the backlash to globalization and development might well come from within emerging markets, and indeed one would have to be fairly cut-off from the news to miss populist expressions of dissatisfaction across the biggest emerging economies over the past couple of years. What's more, Mr. Piketty's work suggests that as the process of catch-up slows inequality trends within countries will begin to dominate inequality trends across countries, leading global inequality to rise once more.

So yes, global inequality has been falling. That is no reason for people of any ideological persuasion to ignore very worrying trends in national distributions of income and wealth.

7 skills all young people need to survive the future of the workplace

Dr. Tony Wagner, co-director of Harvard's Change Leadership Group, argues that today's
school children are facing a "global achievement gap," which is the gap between what even
the best schools are teaching and the skills young people need to learn.
This has been exacerbated by two colliding trends: firstly, the global shift from an industrial
economy to a knowledge economy, and secondly, the way in which today's school children —
brought up with the internet — are motivated to learn.
In his book "The Global Achievement Gap," Wagner identifies seven core competencies every
child needs in order to survive in the coming world of work.
1. Critical thinking and problem-solving
Companies need to be able to continuously improve products, processes and services in order
to compete. And to do this they need workers to have critical thinking skills and to be able to
ask the right questions to get to the bottom of a problem.
2. Collaboration across networks and leading by influence
Given the interconnected nature of the business world, leadership skills and the ability to
influence and work together as a team has become increasingly important. And the key to
becoming an effective leader? It's twofold, says Wagner, involving "creative problem-solving
and a clear ethical framework".
3. Agility and adaptability
The ability to adapt and pick up new skills quickly is vital for success: workers must be able to
use a range of tools to solve a problem. This is also known as "learnability", a sought-after
skills among job candidates.
4. Initiative and entrepreneurialism
There is no harm in trying: often people and businesses suffer from a tendency to be riskaverse. It is better to try 10 things and succeed in eight than it is to try five and succeed in all
of them.
5. Effective oral and written communication
Recruits' fuzzy thinking and inability to articulate their thoughts were common complaints that
Wagner came across from business leaders when researching his book. This isn't so much
about young people's ability to use grammar and punctuation correctly, or to spell, but how to

communicate clearly verbally, in writing or while presenting. "If you have great ideas but you
can't communicate them, then you're lost," Wagner says.
6. Accessing and analyzing information
Many employees have to deal with an immense amount of information on a daily basis: the
ability to sift through it and pull out what is relevant is a challenge. Particularly given how
rapidly the information can change.
7. Curiosity and imagination
Curiosity and imagination are what drive innovation and are key to problem solving. "We're all
born curious, creative and imaginative," says Wagner. "The average four-year-old asks a
hundred questions a day. But by the time that child is 10, he or she is much more likely to be
concerned with getting the right answers for school than with asking good questions.
"What we as teachers and parents need do to keep alive the curiosity and imagination that, to
a greater or lesser extent, is innate in every child."
