Psyc 2283 - lecture 5 - adler: individual psychology. Freud"s ideas, radical in their time, in turn laid the foundation for new approaches: because of limitations of freudian psychoanalysis, there were many disagreements, both small and large. Freud did not tolerate dissent, and eventually some followers split with him and formed their own school of psychoanalysis. Later psychoanalysts developed their own ideas and approaches. Collection of new analysts known as neo-freudians : freud"s influence remained substantial among these analysts. Three main critiques and counter-arguments: experiences beyond first 5 or 6 years can influence personality, social and cultural influences are very important, not just instincts, human nature should be viewed in a more positive and optimistic light. Optimistic and emphasized: social interest (feeling of oneness with all humankind) Differed from freud in four ways: people motivated by social influences. Striving for superiority or success: people responsible for who they are, behaviour is shaped by view of future, consciousness is important.
