Football has become a dominant sport in north american culture. However, youth and high school participation rates are rapidly declining. Last year in calgary, a city with over 25 high school football programs, only fielded 8 junior grade 10 football teams in one combined division (football-jr, With football declining at the grassroots level, it"s important to recognize what the main issues are in order to develop a strategy to solve them. The available literature does a good job identifying potential factors behind the decline in high school football participation. The issues of safety, cost, and a lack of coaches are all valid reasons for the decline. However, the available literature hasn"t really asked the parents of their reasons for not allowing their children to participate. The sport of tackle football has taken several steps to make the sport safer, from rule changes, to better and safer coaching.
