Enemy, directed by denis villeneuve, does not do anything to make it distinctly canadian, nor make it matter as a canadian film. The first argument that can be made for enemy being a canadian film is that it is shot and set in toronto, canada"s largest city. However, the setting does not have a meaningful effect on the story, nor on the characters in the film. The main plot in enemy is about the cyclical pattern of relationships, but it is also about a failing actor struggling to make it big in the film industry. I"m not saying that there isn"t canadian actors struggling to make it big in canada, but the general plot of trying to be a big movie star is a very hollywood plot. In addition, villeneuve takes the beautiful toronto scenery and puts an ugly beige hue over it. And just because a movie is shot in. Canada doesn"t necessarily make it a canadian film.
