Document Summary

Chapter 20: cell adhesion (part 1: cell adhesion, apoptosis, cancer, cell adhesion. Cell motility is crucial for proper functioning of an organism. If cells are to pull on the ecm and crawl over it, they must be able to attach to it multicellular organ built from organized collections of cells (ex of collecting duct) Flexible, but multicellular must be quick, and agile. An organized network of ecm outside the pm, provides support and determines shape and activity of the cell c. t. Ecm is plentiful and carries the mechanical load. They can vary significantly in density and tensile strength (bone, cartilage, tendons, skin) Tensile strength is chiefly provided by a fibrous protein: collagen. Mammals have 20 different collagen genes, consititues 25% of the total protein mass in a mallmal, more than any other type of protein collagen. Fibroblasts secrete collagen and other components of the ecm.
