Document Summary

Chapter 7: from dna to protein (transcription and translation: transcription, prokaryotic, eukaryotic, translation. Happens simultaneously (has no introns so its fast) Gene expression and transcription in nucleus and translation in cytoplasm. Is always produced single stranded because it doesn(cid:495)t have to be. Can (through base pairing and other interactions) form complex 3d structures. Types of rna: mrna, rrna (form the core of the ribosomes structure and catalyze protein synthesis, microrna, transferrna, other non coding rna. Growing rna chain is extended by 1 nt at a time in the 5(cid:495) to 3(cid:495) Rna polymerase moves step-wise along the dna, unwinding the dna helix ahead of the active site to expose a new region of the template stand for complementary base pairing. Rna poly always reads the template strands in the 5(cid:495) to 3(cid:495) direction and therefore synthesises rna in the 3(cid:495) to 5(cid:495) direction. Requires subunit called a sigma factor (holoenzyme is what helps rna pol to recognize promotor/shine dalgarno)
