Entirely shot on a sound stage: if you want to create atmosphere choices in lighting and setting. Lighting effects are actual painted on the sets. Objects in the mise en scene have lighting painted on to them: distorted. Even wrinkles, lines on clothes and hair are painted. Atmosphere with no warmth, no sun: to paint shadows no sun to cast shadows. At the end of the story, finds himself going back to the sanatorium. Asked to put on a framing story, janowitz wanted.
