It"s a western- set in old west, but shows what"s going on in vietnam. 1st film where bullets are seen as actually hurting people- and blood is spilled. They get gas money and freedom money by selling a lot of cocaine at the beginning of the film. Uses rock n" roll (not tame elvis stuff- on the charts on the actual time) Hippie culture is shown as a real life culture not just a joke. Talks about how people say they are free, but they aren"t actually. When they see an actual free (hippie) person they would be scared. Two kinds of freedom shown in this movie. Make a lot of money and do what you want. Do what you want in a counter culture way. Appealing to basic drives and fears of people. It boils it down to shark vs. man. They had to cut it to 1 hour- because nobody wanted to watch an insightful movie.
