STATS 2B03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Statistical Inference, Histogram
Document Summary
Population: consists of all the subjects being studied (aka the target population) Sample: a group of subjects that you select from the population. Descriptive statistics (chapter 2): consists of summarizing and presenting data (e. g. taking the average of a sample) Inferential statistics (chapter 6): consists of using a sample to make a conclusion about a population (main goal of statistics) using probability (chapter 3-5). The sampled population is the population from which the sample is drawn (different from target population). E. g. if you want to study the people of canada, and you take a sample from people from hamilton, the sampled population is hamilton! If i am interested in the avg age of a mac student, then the population is all mac students! If i take a sample of 30 students from this class, then the sampled population would be the students in this class!
