Document Summary

Power is the ability to get things done/make things happen or prevent things from getting done or making things happen. About having control over your life - where you live, how you live. Some ppl have access to more power - this tends to align with privilege. Privilege is what you get when identity matches broader hegemonic forces. Unequal power exists: b/w community and broader society/structures, b/w community members, b/w community members and community workers. Communities exist within in broader social structures that are oppressive. Racism, heterosexism ism etc shape the power that individuals, families and communities exercise over their lives. The social issues that we are most concerned about - poverty, homelessness, child abuse, poor health - are born out of these intersecting oppressions. Is fundamentally connected to broader forces. Communities - while sharing commonality - are always heterogenous. And that heterogeneity is connected to oppression and power.
