First interaction with racism you look like a burnt piece of toast. Family reaction one of casual acceptance and resigned laughter. Oh pearl, kids always say things like that to other kids who are different. Heightened awareness comments in the yard, whispers in the classroom. Personal/professional settings experiences are more covert, yet still, same tone.
