Tonight we are looking at aboriginal ways of helping, colonization, contemporary challenges in aboriginal communities, steps towards healing and worldviews/becoming an ally. The goal is for you to acquire basic knowledge of canadian history, appreciate social changes, strengths and resiliency of aboriginals. Aboriginal peoples were the original inhabitants of what the haudenosaunee nation call turtle island (aka north america, aka i like turtles") Holistic approach: recognition of the whole person including spiritual, physical, emotional and psychological elements. Egalitarianism: a belief that all people should share equal social, political and economic rights. Spirituality is a set of personal beliefs derived from an indivuals perception of self and his or her relationship to both the physical and metaphysical world: not simply just religious or maybe not religious at all. Aboriginal values include: permissiveness, extended family, humility, cooperation, respect for elders, interdependence.
