Tonight will focus on some of the theories that social workers use frequently in their practice. Theories offer us a way at looking at a social problem. It is an organized way of thinking about something and explaining why something might happen. When looking at the history of social work throughout the past 100 years; it went from. Medical/casework and evolved into modern social work a much more political profession to be involved in. Social workers were looking to understand and diagnose what might have been a personal problem. Today, modern social work uses some of the theories we"re going to talk about today to highlight some modern progression. What do we do in social work to try and define the problem: modern social work theory has shifted. Assessment and intervention take place at many different levels. It"s not just about getting the father help with his alcohol issue or his depression, or thinking about potential child neglect.
