Document Summary
Social psychology - mar 29 - the bystander effect and social norms. Influenced by the case of kitty genovese (discussed in previous lecture) Participant hears one of the students having seizure. Various conditions: number of other students (bystanders) participation (2, 5, 6) In reality, no other students in experiment (just recorded voices) If they were the lone bystander, they were the quickest to get up to help. With more bystanders, they took longer to go help. The bystander effect refers to the fact that the greater the number of bystanders in an emergency, the less likely any one bystander will help/the longer they will take to help. The bystanders form a temporary group" where the norm is to ignore the situation. People in public are often not looking around, so they don"t notice. This can be more likely in a busy environment.
