Norms shape behaviour: the decision to intervene/help. Shotland and shaw (1976) experiment: man and woman fight in 2 situations seen as a couple or strangers. People less likely to help when it was seen as a relationship. We don"t want to get involved in peoples private lives. Norms associated with social roles shape the meaning of a situation. Social responsibility fight: we should help other who are dependent on us, e. g. the old, young, or in need. Norms and aggression: help those who help us, (cid:498)an eye for an eye(cid:499, retaliation. Are we more or less violent than other eras: popular answer is yes. Deaths in 20th c. conflicts: 2 world wars: 50-70 mil, 2-3 mil in cambodia (25% of pop. , 1 mill rwandans in 100 days, other wars. ~10 000 years ago murder rates from 15-60% less than 1% during the 20th c.
