Concepts of self in specific roles: e. g. parent, student. We develop a different view of our self when in the certain role: i. e. an identity. Role identities we develop depend on the social positions available to us in society: groups holding stereotypes. Self security can affect how we perceive ourselves in others eyes. Identity control theory: our behavior is an attempt to line up all the meaning of our identities. Defines the meanings attached to a particular identity in a situation. E. g. supervisor identity i have control over people: begin: meanings in the situation, phase 2. The behavior is an input to the supervisor. Compare behavior against indemnity standards: phase 3. Producing emotional reaction (e. g. distress, angry bc we want consistency and this rubs the wrong way: phase 4. Reestablish identity in the situation: loop. E. g. fights are always what they seem, it"s about the value being placed. Micro level on how indent afflicts behavior.
