Postmodernism intellectual term to define conceptualizations of western science & society social life. Attempt to understand western society, critique on how we understand. After end of the modern period in history modernity - period of the enlightenment (1650-1800) era marked by sweeping social changes profound changes in social & intellectual life. Values emphasized science, empiricism, rationality challenged rule of monarchies & church. Rejection of grand organization and over determining narratives: critical of marxs, not everything can be reduced into economics e. g. marxism & economic determinism everything not reducible to class conflict emphasized discontinuity, instability, plurality, difference. Reality is understood as socially constructed work of foucault often located w/in this tradition. Emerged in literary criticism spread quickly throughout humanities & social sciences interpretation is everything. Reality is interpretive, there is no singular reality or truth reality multiple - # of defs of the situation how people perceive the world is mediated & subjective.
