The history of sexuality is not a history of sexual beliefs or behaviours or desire. Is a study of the rise, development and effects of a specific configuration of. Is a rethinking of the relationship between the sexual & the social. It maps the construction of sexuality through institutional discourses (e. g. discourse and social practices around sexuality the family, medicine, law, schools) which create regimes of truth (facts, knowledge) During victorian era there is a discursive explosion around sexuality. Lots and lots of talk about sexuality- what is ab/normal. Rather then a repression of sexuality- not talked about. During this period: sexuality became an identity, was once a series of behaviours or practices, e. g. sodomy = oral & anal sex, bestiality, non-procreative sex, were sinful & criminal. Also during this period heterosexual identity became the norm. Hetero genital sex was natural : b/c of its relationship to reproductive function.
