Sociology"s approach to sexuality: limited, fragmented & problematic. Ignored by classical sociologists marx, weber, durkheim: were concerned with social structure, social order & social control, late 1960s sexuality becomes focus of inquiry in its own right, among critical sociologists, feminists & social historians. 2 early sociology approaches: chicago school & structural functionalism, but both addressed sexuality indirectly, not a major focus or concern. Drive theory of sexuality dominated sociology until 1970s: sexuality becoming substantive area in sociology. I. e. area of scholarship in its own right. Shifted focus to behaviour and not identity: no necessary relationship between gender identity (as male/female) and sexual orientation (hetero/homo) 1850s emergence of modern medical model of sexuality: begins as attempt to understand same-sex orientation, & other forms of sexual deviance & gender inversion, new approach sought to, uncover & explain scientifically the nature of sexuality.
