Statistics - the science of collecting, displaying, and analyzing data. Data - the plural of datum - singular piece of data. The collection of numbers about a particular topic or set of topics. Common mistake: this data - actually: these data . It is important to remember that multiplication and division must be done before addition and subtraction. Exponents - how many times a number is multiplied by itself. Roots - a number when multiplied by itself produces the expected outcome. Square roots come at the end of the calculation. Sigma value - means you"re going to sum it all up. Discrete/ categorical - a number represents separate category or di erential status. Continuous - within the variable range, an in nite number of values are possible. Often re ect an hierarchical order, and equal distances between subsequent values. Household income, age, hours of studying - anything that is number based. All social data are either discrete or continuour.
