Cultural competence is a process, not an event; a journey, not a destination; dynamic, not static; and involves the paradox of knowing. The process of cultural competence consists of 5 interrelated constructs: cultural desire cultural awareness cultural knowledge cultural skill cultural encounters. Cultural competence is an essential component in providing effective and culturally responsive nursing care to all clients.
