Concepts & their measurement: why measure concepts? (if we don"t test, we"re not going to learn anything about populations/social phenomena) Provides a delineation of small or fine differences (stepping stone to learn more about social world & people in it) Provides a way to identify differences with consistency. Two types of definition for a concept: 1. Nominal: describes the concept in words (much like a dictionary definition) Ex/ friendship ways in which people connect with their peers in workplace settings: 2. Operational: describes how the concept is to be measured, making sense of what we"re measuring (ex/ studying friendship term is very ambiguous) need to define/provide a way concept is being measured (scale) Wouldn"t understand how it"s investigated/tested in a study.
