20 views2 pages

Document Summary

Sociologists assert that the social organization of sex and ideologies surrounding sex are not static; they are socially constructed and vary over time and place. Ideas about sex, including: who one should be attracted to and why, the conditions under which sexual contact are acceptable, and actual sexual practices, vary by individual and historical and cultural context. Queer theory is a body of scholarship that cuts across disciplines and examines sexualities: one of the themes of queer theory is a critique of the labels heterosexual, homosexual, and bisexual. While early sociologists failed to study sex many sociologists today study sexuality as there is a recognition that sex is highly politicized and relevant. Studies of sexuality allow sociologists to further their understanding of how race, class, and gender as forms of exploitation are experienced in society. Under industrialization, waged work and the move to urban centers gave people more anonymity and autonomy in terms of their sexuality.
