White people say the unemployment, poverty, crime that is associated with some black people is the reason for racial discrimination. Du bois argued that something else was really going on. He said that the racial discrimination that comes irst, and then it leads to unemployment, crime, poverty etc. associated with some black people. These three factors have led to feelings of hopelessness among black people. Based on his indings, he created a series of class distinctions amongst black people in philadelphia. They suggested that there were four diferent grades : Grade 1 made up of black people earning enough to live well. Grade 2 working class that was living in comfortable conditions. Grade 3 the poor who struggled to make an honest living. Grade 4 lowest class of criminals, prostitutes, and loafers . Many black people did not it the stereotypical images of being poor, unemployed and prone to engage in crime.
