Referred to himself as a non-believer who was fascinated by religion. Had a close-knit and supportive family: learned the values of hard work and saving money, education. Recognized as an outstanding student: skipped ahead two full grades in elementary school, studies in college. Because of his hard work and intelligence he attended a prestigious college in france: learned to speak latin and greek. Developed an interest in scientific methods and moral principles. Comte: sociology allowed him to understand pressing social issues, also allowed him to contribute to the improvement of french society, early employment. Teaching at high schools: philosophy, published a number of articles. Saying that the german social science could be used to develop/enhance french social science. A study for the french ministry of education: involved evaluating german universities, university of berlin.
