Born in 1818 - prussia (a part of europe we now know as germany) Spent time around his father and other lawyers and intellects: listened to their conversations, exposed to egalitarian views (equality, freedom) Law student at the university of bonn (1835) Spent most time drinking, getting into fights, got arrested: not a model student. His father was very concerned - wanted to keep closer tabs on him: managed to convince marx to transfer to the university of berlin (closer to home) Marx took some elective courses in philosophy. Marx switched from law to philosophy: did not please his father. Ended up being blacklisted by the ministry of education in berlin. His thesis supervisor made a lot of controversial statements that did not please the conservative russian government. Ministry of education fired the supervisor - marx = guilty by association. Found employment as a journalist: worked for german newspapers on and off for decades.
