A biographical sketch: early years born in 1858 in france, was jewish, like marx. His father, grandfather and great grandfather have all been rabbis, thought about following foot steps. None of this interested him found himself becoming interested in scientific methods and questions about moral principles: interest in sociology during final year in college he became interested in emerging feild in sociology. Comte coined the term sociology (1830s) durkheim decided that this new area of study (sociology) could help him understand the pressing social issues; this would help improve french society. Science could improve french social science in addition, he started working on a phd (dissertation: university research and teaching, the university of bordeaux. Durkheim had not completed phd yet, his articles lead to him getting a position at university of. Bordeaux got this position because of strength of articles the french ministry of education saw durkheim as someone that could add something to french social science.
