Different immigrant groups come into the us and canada under varying conditions (blauner, 1972) Size, distribution, timing all vary (portes and rumbant, 1990) Culture of poverty ignores the history of disadvantages for those in poverty (why they"re in this position) Those who are in poverty will likely finish (possibly) their grade 11/12 and then enter the labour force (want immediate gratification) Middle or upper class children may choose to displace gratification by getting a post-secondary education because they"re financially stable enough to pursue this. 1945-1966: south east europe: greeks, italians, etc immigrating. Mid 1960s present: rise in asian immigrants (kalbach, 1987: in canada we have more racial diversity after the 1960s, a disconnect between levels of education and the way it fares out in the labour movement.
