Race is a social construction, not a biological fact (sernau, 2014: 110) White privilege was a term to distinguish people from european heritage from african american heritage (even those of poor white status) Whiteness matters in terms of what privilege is. Irish eventually recognized as white (by putting down visible minorities to raise their own privilege) In the 16-17th century much of english anger was focused on ireland (numerous attempts to concur the irish) This hostility set the stage for the relationship between the irish and british when britain went out and concurred other countries (they weren"t viewed as white) In the 19th century used to classify and identify groups (difficult categorizing groups of people because not everyone fits into one category) Skin pigmentation, hair type, size of brain used to group peoples.
