Social institutions build up over the last 50 years now are decaying. Based on 30/30/40 labour market by hutton (1995. Sample of 6 high schools in edmonton (both middle and working class) Binary variable: whether or not at least one parent had completed a university degree (used this to measure ses) Middle class youth typically do better in high school, more likely to complete academic high school programmes. Middle class youth more likely to recognize the value of post secondary-education and have higher aspiration. Middle class youth more likely to have a long history of secondary credentials. Having one parent finish their uni degree means kid will prob do better in hs. Social class positioning impacts/influences out life chances. Changes in the occupational structure (resulting from decline in manufacturing to service industries-shift from blue collar to white collar service work) [ changes in market force and institutional forces]
