Polyamory involves intimate sexual and emotional relationships between multiple partners. Both men and women have access to additional partners (gender equality) Negotiation of rules such as safe-sex practices and schedules. Variation in number of individuals involved and duration of relationships. Polyamory is not based on religion and does not always include a marital relationship. Challenges ideas about monogamy, sexual jealousy, and partner satisfaction. Likely to affect/challenge social policy and family law in the future (how family law regulates relationship break up) Can be distinguished from non-monogamous sexual relationships either in delity in monogamous relationships or consensual non-monogamous relationships. Spouses /boyfriends/girlfriends engaging in sex with others. Swinging is often less accepting of/forbid emotional intimacy (focus on sexual variety) Recent research challenges the idea that married women are coerced into swinging by their husbands (both report equal satisfaction) Greater societal acceptance, more relationship breakup, can afford, longer life expectancies. Living independently necessitates economic resources, and many canadians cannot.
