Lecture 13; gender and domestic work: identities and. In non-egalitarian societies: the division of labour was different between men and women but - people were just doing different tasks; they would be seen as equally valuable to society. Women especially working class women are exploited in a double way; one by the employer and by doing housework. Because the work that is done outside the home makes it possible for capitalists to have workers. All that labour that is performed capitalists are guaranteed workers -- this work is free and is necessary for the capitalist system to work/grow. The kind of labour that benefits society as a whole; i. e. raising children to act in society. With the emergence of class-divided/ unequal societies, but even more so capitalist societies, a specific notion of motherhood emerged: one based on the idea that a woman"s place is in the home.
