Background: former star college quarterback, long-time hip-hop fan and gender violence prevention educator. Provides a loving-critique of a number of disturbing trends in the world of rap music. He pays tribute to hip-hop while challenging the rap music industry to take responsibility for glamourizing destructive portrayals. Everyone stays inside this box of what man hood is: Through rap we see stereotypical male standards come through. In their rap lyrics it heavily portrays gun violence, feminization of men and striking fears into the hearts of other men. Especially coming from the hood* you have to be hard in order to survive. Also have to consider the history of black men in the us. The gun becomes the symbol of rage for black men. What we have to understand first of all is rap was created in the ghettos -- these places were like war-zones. The conditions that these people live in our hard and impoverished.
