The big three set out the intellectual foundations of social inquiry still used today. Foundational ontologies , metaphysics or world views that underpin all social research. Division of labour probably most significant to studies of media. Ideal types, not real things, approximations of how things could run most according to plan. Humans are not necessarily aware of their world, and as such are often exploited. Early media studies based on scholarship of marxist theories and socialists interested in revolutionary change in social relations. Humans are happiest/reaching their full potential when they are molding their environment in ways satisfying to themselves, their own wishes and desires. Under capitalism, people are not doing that lol. Historical materialism/economic determinism social change/cohesion is pinned to the means by which humans create the necessities to sustain social life. People will enter into social relations based on their need to survive and reproduce.
