Midterm assignment due in hardcopy in two weeks (november 12th) This is often to compliment qualitative and quantitative research techniques: to explore other themes or trends. Often using material that already exists that are perhaps significant symbols themselves or even symbolic of a specific society or culture. Helpful to grasp an understanding of how issues were/are understood. Frame analysis: role of selection and salience of images. Salience is dependent on some of the photos. It means the consistent reinforcement of a particular image, person, behaviour etc: example: photos of children in childhood (selection, example: taylor swift appearing at least more than 1 in every publication (salience) Often the best way to reach the widest group of participants is through multi- methods. Can involve a survey with in-depth interviews or focus groups, etc. , This allows for greater reliability and validity because the multi-method technique balances out the disadvantages of each technique.
